Dear All, I am at the beginning of a long but fulfilling process of presenting you a new, fresh and more user friendly website. Just like in the title, the very interesting instrument called TAROGATO is somewhere in between the Saxophone and the Clarinet. I like to say, it is a wooden saxophone.

On November 22 at the Budapest Music Center the UMZE Ensemble will team up with the best Hungarian jazz and etno-jazz players/composers to present the Crossover Concerto Project. Saxophones, the Clarinet and also the Tárogató will be featured as solo instruments. Check out the details here!

After a succesful and very well received classical concert in Huntsville I am back in Budapest to conduct two contemporary music programs. After Monday’s concert we will start the rehearsals for a special program at the Palace of the Arts. Many pieces by German-Hungarian organ player-composer Zsigmond Szathmáry will be performed among them a Requiem in the memory of Fukushima. I will be conducting the New Liszt Chamber Choir and the UMZE Ensemble. Check out the November 30 concert program below.

Egy sikeres és a közönség által igen nagy lelkesedéssel fogadott Huntsville-i klasszikus koncert után ismét Budapesten vagyok, ahol az elkövetkező 12 napban két hangversenyt is dirigálok. Az UMZE nemcsak jövő hétfőn lép fel a BMC-ben, de 30-án a MÜPÁban is. A második koncert fókuszában a Németországban élő kiváló magyar orgonista-zeneszerző Szathmáry Zsigmond művei lesznek majd. Az UMZE muzsikusai mellett az Új Liszt Ferenc Kamarakórus énekművészeit is dirigálhatom Szathmáry Requiem Fukushima emlékére című művében. A programról részletesen az alábbi linken lehet olvasni.

Festivals, Ensembles | Fesztiválok, együttesek

The conducting-composition masterclass called ‘Spotlight on Georges Aperghis’ has ended a few days ago. Aperghis, the world famous Greek-French composer himself was here and has been teaching alongside Peter Eötvös and myself. With the musicians of the Danubia Symphony, with two wonderful vocal soloists and with the principal bass of the Berlin Philharmonic we have presented an amazing concert conducted by our students. As you can see, there is a new festival now in Budapest, Hungary called ‘Liszt Fest’ (the famous pianist and composer of the Romantic era was born in October). I am happy to report that not only ‘Spotlight on Georges Aperghis’ but also the world-premiere staging of my mono-concert-opera ‘Transporters’ has been chosen to be part of the first edition of this festival. UMZE Ensemble is playing! I am and will be posting many details on the production on Facebook and Instagram. You can follow this adventure there. I am also very happy to conduct – now for the second time – ‘Into the Little Hill’ by the British composer giant, George Benjamin for this show.
I am stepping in last minute to conduct Riot Ensemble from the UK. There will be two concerts in Austria, one in Salzburg on October 29 at ‘Crossroads Festival’, and another in Graz on October 30 at ‘Open Music Graz’. On the program: a piece by Brian Ferneyhough and four student composers. After just a few days of rest I will be on my way to Poitiers, France. As a continuation of my Artist in Residence program I will be conducting a concert with instrumental ensemble Ars Nova and a chamber choir in Poitiers, France. This will be an Arvo Pärt show with some Stravinsky and Charles Ives in it. Details here:

Néhány napja fejeztük be ‘Fókuszban Georges Aperghis’ programunkat az Eötvös Péter Kortárs Zenei Alapítvány szervezésében. A görög-francia zeneszerző mester maga is csatlakozott hozzánk, és a Berlini Filharmonikus szólóbőgőse, vokál-szólisták és a Danubia Zenekar muzsikusival együtt fantasztikus koncertet adtunk a BMC-ben. Nagy örömömre nem csak az Aperghis-program, de az Esterházy Péter kisregénye alapján készült mono-koncert-operám színpadi ősbemutatója is helyet kapott az idén először megrendezésre kerülő Liszt Ünnep fesztiválon. Horváth Csaba rendezésében kerül a MÜPA Fesztiválszínház színpadára a darab, együtt George Benjamin ‘Into the Little Hill’ című kamaraoperájával, amelyet, nagy örömömre, immár másodszor vezényelhetek, most is az UMZE Együttes élén. László Sáry: Cantata Dorogiensis de Eucharistia (live performance for distinguished guests of the International Eucharistic Congress in Dorog, Hungary)
Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto, Richard Strauss: Aus Italien (with the Savaria Symphony for their season opening concert in Szombathely, Hungary. Cello soloist: Tamás Varga)
Marcell Dargay: Ricercar, Dániel Dinyés: Capriccio, Matthias Pintscher: Occultation, Balázs Horváth: Quasi ciaccona metrica (at the helm of the UMZE Ensemble for the opening concert of this year’s edition of ‘European Bridges Festival’ of Palace of the Arts, Budapest. Trumpet solos were played by Simon Hoefele from Berlin, and Tamás Pálfalvi. The extremely difficult horn solo for Mr. Pintscher’s composition was played by János Benyus.)
Liszt: Piano Concerto No.1&2 (for the final round and gala of the International Liszt Piano Competition at the Liszt Academy in Budapest. The orchestral accompaniment was played by the Hungarian National Philharmonic, solos were played by Kevin Chen (1st prize), Giovanni Bertolazzi (2nd Prize), and Gergely Kovács (3rd Prize). Both the Finals and the Gala were live broadcast.)

With and Without Words | Szavakkal, szavak nélkül

Ars Nova Ensemble and I have concluded our first project together around 9PM yesterday. I enjoyed my time at the beautiful city of Poitiers, France, and took good use of everything the TAP (Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers) had to offer. With the wonderful musicians and crew of Ensemble Ars Nova along with international soloists I have worked on a program of my own making: Georges Aperghis: Le Corps à Corps, György Ligeti: Aventures, Claude Vivier: Bouchara, György Kurtág: What is the Word. We have also premiered my new piece commissioned by and composed for Ars Nova, L’analphabète, to the autobiographical text of Agota Kristof. Since there was no audience allowed in the hall, we have filmed the entire concert, and we will be releasing the project online very soon. This specially designed program is one of many for my next 3 years as Artist in Residence of Ars Nova. This time we were trying to communicate about the impossibility and also the possibility of communication, about language through music, the ability and the inability of speaking, about lost and found languages and many other related topics. The program was also designed to pay homage to world famous Hungarian composer, György Kurtág on his 95th Birthday.

Tegnap este 9 körül fejeződött be első közös projektem a franciaországi Ars Nova együttessel. Poitiers városa gyönyörű, és a helyi koncert- és előadóterem-komplexum a TAP (Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers) kiváló helyszín (nagyjából egyidős a budapesti MÜPÁva; belsőépítészetileg is sok a hasonlóság). Az Ars Nova együttes muzsikusai és szervezői segítségével megvalósíthattam a kommunikáció és a beszéd lehetetlenségéről, a zene és a nyelv végtelen kapcsolódási pontjairól, avagy az elvesztett és meglelt nyelvről szóló projektemet. A 95 éves Kurtág Györgynek dedikált programban Georges Aperghis: Le Corps à Corps, Ligeti György: Aventures, Claude Vivier: Bouchara, Kurtág György: What is the Word című darabjai mellet vezényelhettem legújabb művemet szopránra és kamaraegyüttesre, ‘Az analfabéta’ címmel. Az Agota Kristof önéletrajzi szövegének részleteire készült darab (első művem francia nyelven) az Ars Nova megrendelésére, kifejezetten erre a projektre született. Mivel Franciaországban még nem lehet közönséggel koncerteket tartani, ezért az egész előadást filmre vettük, amely gyors editálás után hamarosan online lesz elérhető.

I am writing this post on March 15, Independence Day of Hungary, in Budapest. This long, festive weekend marks the first three consecutive days off for over a month. I have been working and traveling a lot, and it won’t change much until the end of the season. Since my last post I have conducted the Hungarian Radio Symphony at the Liszt Academy (including the World Premiere of my newest orchestral composition, Gloomy Sunday Variations), the Huntsville Symphony in two different programs, and taught a masterclass at the Budapest Music Center with Heinz Holliger and Peter Eötvös. I am getting ready to conduct the magnificent Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler with the Hungarian Radio Symphony at MUPA (Palace of the Arts) on March 20,

Clarinet Symphony NEW ALBUM / Klarinét Szimfónia ÚJ ALBUM

“Vajda’s Clarinet Symphony for two clarinets (performed by Gábor Varga and János Szepesi) and orchestra was less folk-flavored and more focused on a fascinating orchestrational features that, in many cases, overshadowed the soloists’ content. It was structured in seven short movements that employed the “variations” idea via a suite that harkened back to the Baroque model. Vajda’s language was a unique modern tongue, not triadic or modal, but definitely his own, and characterised by skillful use of winds and percussion to cook up little sonic worlds that burbled and bubbled like extraterrestrial bodies.”

Holiday Wishes from Around the World

It’s time for the last entry of the calendar year. Why? Because I will be on my way to Taiwan next Monday, then off to China on December 26, and I won’t be back until early January. This will be my first ever trip to Asia ever. I will be conducting the Kaohsiung Symphony Orchestra in an all Viennese program, again with the great American soprano, Rebecca Nelsen singing. After that comes a multi-stop concert tour with the musicians of the Hungarian Radio Symphony. We will be playing Beethoven Symphony No.8 along with Strauss’ Kaiserwaltzer and other great and fun pieces.
As for what happened since my last blog entry, here is a short summary. On November 14 I have conducted a program with the Hungarian radio Symphony at the Palace of the Arts (MUPA), Budapest. The program was made up of two Mahler compositions, Songs of a Wayfarer and Symphony No.1 “Titan”, and the famous ‘Cantus Artcticus’, concerto for birds and orchestra by Rautavaara. The Radio Symphony and I have made history by playing a Rautavaara work for the very first time in the (now about 18yo) history o Palace of the Arts. After a short and sweet Thanksgiving break with friends in Milwaukee, Wisconsin I have gotten a lot of things done in Huntsville in preparation for season 18-19. Last week after spending two full days at the Budapest Music Center, composer-conductor Peter Eötvös and myself have selected 4 young composers and 2 conductors for the multi-year mentor program of the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation. Two days ago I have spent a day working with the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra in Pécs.
In the meantime I have finished Part One of my new-old Puppet Opera, The Giant Baby (premiere early July, 2018 at the Armel Festival) and have sent the vocal scores to the singers. I am planning to finish working on the opera latest by mid March, 2018. More on it later!

Action Packed Three Weeks

Huntsville Symphony has had a successful opening classical week with Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition and Orff’s Carmina Burana. It was just the perfect way to start the season and to create lots of positive buzz. My first weekend of the 2017-18 season at Huntsville also included an extensive day of auditions for several positions, including Concert Master and Principal Cello. We have hired some talented players and will be inviting candidates to fill the principal spots starting January.
The week after I have traveled to New Brunswick, NJ and conducted the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra. The program was the following: Ravel: La Valse, Haydn: Cello Concerto in C, Stravinsky: Petrushka. It was a great week with the young players and with this fun program. Also the first time ever I have stayed at an actual university campus. It was good to reunite and to spend some time with my friend, Al Baer, principal tuba player of the New York Phil and the head of the brass department at Rutgers. Last Friday I have conducted the second classical show of the season in Huntsville. Both our soloist, Claire Huangci and the orchestra did a great job in an especially difficult program. Ravel: Rapsodie Espagnol,Piano Concerto in G, Respighi: Fountains of Rome, and Debussy: La Mer. Just two days later, on Sunday we presented our first Casual Classics performance with Schubert’s genius Octet for which I have picked up my clarinet again. It was our usual, annual dinner/concert setting with the musicians telling funny stories about themselves. Oh yes, and the performance took place at the Yellowhammer Brewery’s Speakeasy, a perfect venue for this serenade-like composition.
I am writing this post at the KLM Lounge at the Amsterdam Airport. When I am done, I am going to continue watching YouTube videos of 77 young conductors who have applied to the multi year mentor program of the International Eotvos Contemporary Music Foundation. This week Peter Eotvos and I will be selecting the ones who will travel to Budapest in December to participate in a live audition along with 30 some young composers.
