Dear All, I am at the beginning of a long but fulfilling process of presenting you a new, fresh and more user friendly website. I hope that, as planned, you will be able to enjoy it by the end of September. New format, new pictures, new videos, renewed blog (most likely a vlog) and so much more will be coming. After this busy week I will return to Hungary to conduct the UMZE New Music Ensemble. We will be premiering Fermata by Peter Eötvös, written for an international consortium including Ensemble Intercontemporain and UMZE Ensemble. Our March 6 performance will be the very first time this brand new composition will ever be performed. For the same concert UMZE is also playing another World Premiere by internationally known Hungarian composer Judit Varga, and a new ensemble piece by yours truly. Also on the program Ligeti’s famous Piano Concerto, and a selection from Kurtág cycle, Games (ensemble version).

After the UMZE concert (stay tuned, there will be video available sooner than later) I will be conducting the Hungarian Radio Symphony at the Liszt Academy. We will be playing a beautiful program (postponed twice due to COVID) with pieces by Liszt, Debussy, Britten and Hungarian composer, György Orbán.
This is definitely the busiest time of the season! I am loving it!

Március első hetében azután következik az UMZE együttes hangversenye, melyen Eötvös Péter új ensemble darabjának, a Fermata címűnek (egy nemzetközi együttesekből álló konzorcium megrendelése, köztük az Ensemble Intercontemporain és az UMZE). A budapesti koncerten hangzik fel a mű a világon először. Lesz még bemutató Varga Judittól is, és az én Kánon-bagatellek című művem is itt találkozik először a közönséggel, Fejérvári János adja elő Ligeti Zongoraversenyét, és Kurtág Játékok sorozatának darabjait is elmuzsikáljuk, ezúttal ensemble verzióban. Érdemes lesz élőben ott lenni a BMC-ben!

The conducting-composition masterclass called ‘Spotlight on Georges Aperghis’ has ended a few days ago. Aperghis, the world famous Greek-French composer himself was here and has been teaching alongside Peter Eötvös and myself. With the musicians of the Danubia Symphony, with two wonderful vocal soloists and with the principal bass of the Berlin Philharmonic we have presented an amazing concert conducted by our students. As you can see, there is a new festival now in Budapest, Hungary called ‘Liszt Fest’ (the famous pianist and composer of the Romantic era was born in October). I am happy to report that not only ‘Spotlight on Georges Aperghis’ but also the world-premiere staging of my mono-concert-opera ‘Transporters’ has been chosen to be part of the first edition of this festival. UMZE Ensemble is playing! I am and will be posting many details on the production on Facebook and Instagram. You can follow this adventure there. I am also very happy to conduct – now for the second time – ‘Into the Little Hill’ by the British composer giant, George Benjamin for this show.
I am stepping in last minute to conduct Riot Ensemble from the UK. There will be two concerts in Austria, one in Salzburg on October 29 at ‘Crossroads Festival’, and another in Graz on October 30 at ‘Open Music Graz’. On the program: a piece by Brian Ferneyhough and four student composers. After just a few days of rest I will be on my way to Poitiers, France. As a continuation of my Artist in Residence program I will be conducting a concert with instrumental ensemble Ars Nova and a chamber choir in Poitiers, France. This will be an Arvo Pärt show with some Stravinsky and Charles Ives in it. Details here:

Néhány napja fejeztük be ‘Fókuszban Georges Aperghis’ programunkat az Eötvös Péter Kortárs Zenei Alapítvány szervezésében. A görög-francia zeneszerző mester maga is csatlakozott hozzánk, és a Berlini Filharmonikus szólóbőgőse, vokál-szólisták és a Danubia Zenekar muzsikusival együtt fantasztikus koncertet adtunk a BMC-ben. Nagy örömömre nem csak az Aperghis-program, de az Esterházy Péter kisregénye alapján készült mono-koncert-operám színpadi ősbemutatója is helyet kapott az idén először megrendezésre kerülő Liszt Ünnep fesztiválon. Horváth Csaba rendezésében kerül a MÜPA Fesztiválszínház színpadára a darab, együtt George Benjamin ‘Into the Little Hill’ című kamaraoperájával, amelyet, nagy örömömre, immár másodszor vezényelhetek, most is az UMZE Együttes élén. Long January I Hosszú január

“January has been a long year, but I have survived”. I’ve run into this meme online a couple of times in the past week. Indeed, a lot has happened in politics and international affairs since we have entered the Twenties of the century. It feels like my own affairs, too are getting up to speed with the news cycle. Confession: I like the speed and the buzz. 🙂
I am alternating between composing (working on ‘The Music Gene’ piece now for April), studying for upcoming concerts (Ravel and Trombones is coming up) and brushing up on my German (it is rusty to say the least).

“Január hosszú év volt, de túléltük.” Egy hete sokadszorra futok bele az interneten ebbe a mémbe, és valóban a hírciklus még a szokásosnál is jobban felgyorsulni látszik. Nem panaszkodhatom, mert az én dolgaim is sűrűn követik egymást, és nem mondhatom, hogy ez ne lenne kedvemre való. I am lucky to be here in Victoria, BC in person to rehearse with the Tsilumos Ensemble. I am looking forward to hearing my music played live for the first time ever at tomorrow’s rehearsal. I will post the video of the World Premiere as soon as it is made available by the festival.
On August 20 I am off to the old World to partake in the first ever European Creative Academy for musicians in beautiful Annecy, France. I will be working as a guest professor and lecturer, and will be representing the Eötvös Foundation. I am looking forward to work with my musician friends from Ensemble Intercontemporain!

the program above is on tomorrow for my debut performance with the Kodály Philharmony (Debrecen, Hungary). This concert marks another milestone in the series of concerts in the last couple of years in which I finally had the chance to work with all the major local orchestras in Hungary. I am privileged to work with the Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra a couple of times a year for multiple seasons now (they are based in Pécs, Hungary), but as of 2019 I have had the pleasure to work with the Györ Philharmonic orchestra (last summer for the European Clarinet Conference), the Miskolc Symphony (just last month with two concerts and a beautifully challenging program of music by Brahms and Stravinsky), and the Szeged Symphony (Schumann and Mahler, but I also conducted them in Mozart’s The Magic Flute as my London debut). I have worked with the Savaria Symphony as well, a group I have known for a while from the Bartok Festival and Seminar, and to which I will be returning next season for a subscription concert.

The month of April was busy with the last Casual Classics of the season in Huntsville (Alabama Storytellers II), a conducting an composition masterclass at the Budapest Music Center, where I was teaching alongside with the world famous composer Kaija Saariaho, Peter Eötvös and the former General Music Director of the Budapest Opera, Peter Halász. The Peter Eötvös Foundation has also made my role with them official and named me Program Director. In a week I am looking forward to returning to Huntsville to conduct the 6th Classical Concert of the 18-19 season with the wonderful Susanna Phillips as soloist.

A koncert egy újabb fontos állomása annak a szerencsésen alakult sorozatnak, amelynek részeként az elmúlt pár évben karmesterként bemutatkozhattam az összes nagyobb magyar zenekar élén, bizonyítandó, hogy Budapesten kívül is van komolyzenei élet, de még milyen! Időben visszafelé haladva: Kodály Filharmónia (Debrecen), Miskolci Szimfonikusok, Győri Filharmonikus Zenekar, Szegedi Szimfonikusok. A szombathelyi Savaria Szimfonikusokat és a pécsi Pannon Filharmonikusokat már többször dirigálhattam, és idén is, valamint a 2019-20-as szezonban is visszatérek hozzájuk vendégkarmesterként.

I am writing this post on March 15, Independence Day of Hungary, in Budapest. This long, festive weekend marks the first three consecutive days off for over a month. I have been working and traveling a lot, and it won’t change much until the end of the season. Since my last post I have conducted the Hungarian Radio Symphony at the Liszt Academy (including the World Premiere of my newest orchestral composition, Gloomy Sunday Variations), the Huntsville Symphony in two different programs, and taught a masterclass at the Budapest Music Center with Heinz Holliger and Peter Eötvös. I am getting ready to conduct the magnificent Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler with the Hungarian Radio Symphony at MUPA (Palace of the Arts) on March 20,

Zongoraversenyével (Balog József) és Sztravinszkij Tavaszi Áldozatával a programban.

Action Packed Three Weeks

Huntsville Symphony has had a successful opening classical week with Mussorgsky-Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition and Orff’s Carmina Burana. It was just the perfect way to start the season and to create lots of positive buzz. My first weekend of the 2017-18 season at Huntsville also included an extensive day of auditions for several positions, including Concert Master and Principal Cello. We have hired some talented players and will be inviting candidates to fill the principal spots starting January.
The week after I have traveled to New Brunswick, NJ and conducted the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra. The program was the following: Ravel: La Valse, Haydn: Cello Concerto in C, Stravinsky: Petrushka. It was a great week with the young players and with this fun program. Also the first time ever I have stayed at an actual university campus. It was good to reunite and to spend some time with my friend, Al Baer, principal tuba player of the New York Phil and the head of the brass department at Rutgers. Last Friday I have conducted the second classical show of the season in Huntsville. Both our soloist, Claire Huangci and the orchestra did a great job in an especially difficult program. Ravel: Rapsodie Espagnol,Piano Concerto in G, Respighi: Fountains of Rome, and Debussy: La Mer. Just two days later, on Sunday we presented our first Casual Classics performance with Schubert’s genius Octet for which I have picked up my clarinet again. It was our usual, annual dinner/concert setting with the musicians telling funny stories about themselves. Oh yes, and the performance took place at the Yellowhammer Brewery’s Speakeasy, a perfect venue for this serenade-like composition.
I am writing this post at the KLM Lounge at the Amsterdam Airport. When I am done, I am going to continue watching YouTube videos of 77 young conductors who have applied to the multi year mentor program of the International Eotvos Contemporary Music Foundation. This week Peter Eotvos and I will be selecting the ones who will travel to Budapest in December to participate in a live audition along with 30 some young composers.

After “MagyarFeszt” (a festival of Hungarian operas organized by the State Opera), I was invited to teach a conducting master class with Peter Eötvös at his Contemporary Music Institute. It was a great week with the Danubia Orchestra and the music of Wolfgang Rihm and Zoltan Kodály. Next week, with the June 28 performance of “Prima Donna” opens the 10th Armel Opera Festival and Competition. I will also conduct the final gala concert of the Armel Festival with award winning singers from France and Hungary. It’s going to be a nice change of pace with music by Mozart, Donizetti, Bizet, Gounod and others.
