House of Music, Hungary | Magyar Zene Háza

Since my last entry a lot has happened, times were busy (as you can usually tell by the weeks that have passed without a blogpost…), and rich of experiences. I have conducted a new music studio-concert with the Hungarian Radio Symphony, including my piece, Lessons with Vivaldi. There was a concert with the Savaria Symphony in Szombathely, Hungary (pieces by Bartók and Bruckner), one new music set with the MAV Symphony Orchestra, and a presentation with UMZE Ensemble. We have performed Phlegra by Iannis Xenakis. The show was part of the Xenakis 100 day-long program of the House of Music, Hungary. I will have two more concerts with the Savaria Orchestra in June, one will include the world premiere of Fort Fanfare, a festive piece of music I wrote for the Kőszeg Castle Open Air Theater’s 40th Birthday celebration. At the end of the month the Peter Eötvös Foundation and Ensemble Ars Nova from France will present a conductor-composer master class at the Budapest Music Center. This was supposed to happen early this year, but it was postponed due to covid concerns. Our distinguished guest professor will be the world famous Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg.

Also, there will be some very exciting news to share very soon, so stay tuned!

Legutóbbi bejegyzésem óta a szokásosnál több idő telt el. Ebből is látszik, hogy nem unatkoztam… A Rádiózenekarral, majd a MÁV Zenekarral is volt egy egy kortárs zenei koncertem (előbbin elhangzott Leckék Vivaldival című darabom is), a Savaria Szimfonikusokkal pedig Bartók és Bruckner műveket dirigáltam. Az UMZE együttessel, a Phlegra című kompozíció előadásával, részt vettünk a Magyar Zene Háza (aki még nem ismeri, az kattintson a fenti linkre) Xenakis 100 programján. A Savaria Zenekarral még kétszer lépek fel júniusban, egyszer Zalaegerszegen, egyszer pedig a Kőszegi Várszínház jubileumi programsorozatán. Utóbbira rendelte a Kőszegi Várszínház Várfanfár című zenekari darabomat, amelyet kifejezetten az ottani udvar akusztikája inspirált. Június végén pótoljuk az Eötvös Péter Alapítvány és az Ars Nova együttes közös januári kurzusát, amely COVID miatt lett halasztva. Magnus Lindberg, világhírű finn zeneszerző lesz a vendégprofesszor. Várunk mindenkit a BMC-ben!

Ja igen, és hamarosan 2 izgalmas bejelenteni valóm is lesz, szóval „maradjon mindenki a készülékek előtt”!

Just like in the title, the very interesting instrument called TAROGATO is somewhere in between the Saxophone and the Clarinet. I like to say, it is a wooden saxophone.

On November 22 at the Budapest Music Center the UMZE Ensemble will team up with the best Hungarian jazz and etno-jazz players/composers to present the Crossover Concerto Project. Saxophones, the Clarinet and also the Tárogató will be featured as solo instruments. Check out the details here!

After a succesful and very well received classical concert in Huntsville I am back in Budapest to conduct two contemporary music programs. After Monday’s concert we will start the rehearsals for a special program at the Palace of the Arts. Many pieces by German-Hungarian organ player-composer Zsigmond Szathmáry will be performed among them a Requiem in the memory of Fukushima. I will be conducting the New Liszt Chamber Choir and the UMZE Ensemble. Check out the November 30 concert program below.

Egy sikeres és a közönség által igen nagy lelkesedéssel fogadott Huntsville-i klasszikus koncert után ismét Budapesten vagyok, ahol az elkövetkező 12 napban két hangversenyt is dirigálok. Az UMZE nemcsak jövő hétfőn lép fel a BMC-ben, de 30-án a MÜPÁban is. A második koncert fókuszában a Németországban élő kiváló magyar orgonista-zeneszerző Szathmáry Zsigmond művei lesznek majd. Az UMZE muzsikusai mellett az Új Liszt Ferenc Kamarakórus énekművészeit is dirigálhatom Szathmáry Requiem Fukushima emlékére című művében. A programról részletesen az alábbi linken lehet olvasni.

Happy Creative New Year/ Boldog Alkotó Új Év(et)

December has been an especially active month for me as a composer. I have finished my newest opera entitled ‘Transporters’ (‘Fuharosok’ in Hungarian). It is a mono-concert-opera for 1 singer (or if decided by a stage director, it can also be done by 3 singers) and 15 players based on the novel of the same title by Péter Esterházy (1950-2016). ‘Transporters’ will be first performed in its natural concert-form with the UMZE Ensemble, Anna Molnár singing the vocal part, on March 13, 2020 at the Budapest Music Center, conducted by me.

December 26-án, majdnem napra pontosan 6 hónappal az első hang leírása után, befejeztem ‘Fuharosok’ című mono-koncert-operámat Esterházy Péter azonos című regénye alapján. 2020 március 13-án lesz a bemutató az UMZE hangversenyén Molnár Anna előadásában. A Radio Romance/ Rádiórománc

Back in my days with the Oregon Symphony I have met Garrison Keillor in person, and asked him to sign the Hungarian language version of his book, A Radio Romance, I owned. He kindly did so, then said the following: “This is a nice book, look, they even put pictures in it!” Indeed, as it happens perhaps more often in Europe than in the US with these kind of books, it was full of illustrations, and pleasing to the eye. It seems, I am having my own romance with Radio this weekend. On Saturday morning at 10AM local time I will be on the air as the guest of a show called Capriccio at KlasszikRadio. Should you want to practice your Hungarian, and listen to some music I am bringing, you can tune in via the linke below. [This program is going to be on at a later day, actually. I will keep you posted!] On Sunday afternoon at 5PM local time, I am invited to another live classical music radio show called Close To Music. Well-known Hungarian media legend, Előd Juhász, now host of this show at the Catholic Radio, will interview me, again illustrated with music suggested by me. I am spending a few more days in Budapest, Hungary before returning to the US to start the season with the Huntsville Symphony. I will be posting about our first classical show soon. Tomorrow, Friday, I am attending the first concert of the season of the new-music ensemble UMZE, of which I became the Artistic Director not long ago. This is going to be the first program planned by me. The theme is: Eastern Spirituality, Western Music. Pieces by Claude Vivier and Tour Takemitsu along with compositions by two young Hungarians will be performed along with a a conversation between the evening’s conductor, László Tihanyi and author, tibetologist László Sári. I am looking forward to listening to the conversation myself, since there are many exciting topics to touch on related to music and spirituality, especially when one looks at different cultures. Not that I am trying to bury the news in the middle of my post, but this is the time and place to let you know, I have resigned as the Artistic Director of the Armel Opera Festival effective July 10, 2019. It has been an exciting and challenging ride, and I am thankful to Armel for many great projects! I am happy to be able to dedicate more time to my Artistic Director job with the UMZE Ensemble, and to my Program Director position with the Peter Eötvös Foundation in the future.

A fenti linkeken hallgathatók majd a velem készített élő zenés rádió interjúk, a Capriccióban szombat reggel 10-kor [ez az adás mint kiderült “ál-élő”, tehát nem a felvétel időpontjában kerül sugárzásra, hogy mikor, arról majd még posztolok itt vagy a FaceBookon.], a Zeneközelben műsorában pedig vasárnap 17 órakor. Igyekeztem izgalmas, és különböző zenéket válogatni, így talán érdemes mindkét adást hallgatni, ha valami miatt nem élőben, akkor online utólag is. Az én hétvégi románcom a rádióval emlékeztetett arra a napra még oregoni éveim alatt, amikor a híres amerikai rádiós személyiség, Garrison Keillor, dedikálta nekem saját könyvének, a Rádiórománcnak magyar nyelvű kiadását. “Szép könyv és mennyi sok szép képet raktak bele!” -mondta az illusztrált kötetre, amiből persze, a címen és a saját nevén kívül, semmi mást nem tudott elolvasni.

A szezon kezdetére a rádiós megjelenéseken és koncert-híreken kívül még tartogattam azért egy bejelentést. Idén július 10-től lemondtam az Armel Operaveseny és Fesztiválnál betöltött művészeti vezetői pozíciómról. Erről itt nyilatkoztam egy kicsit részletesebben:
