Schubert: Rosamunde Overture, Schumann: Cello Concerto and Mahler: Symphony #1 was the program of my concert with the Szeged Symphony on May 17. Miklós Perényi, one of the greatest cellists of the world played the solo part. The concert took place in the beautiful National Theater of Szeged. It was a great treat for me to conduct this program and a nice experience working with Szeged Symphony for the first time in a very long time.

I will be conducting Henze’s Elegy for Young Lovers with the Pannon Philharmonic and the young singers of the Academy of Music Budapest. I will also be doing a pre-rehearsal for Peter Eötvös’ newest opera called Senza sangue. This is the same work I will be conducting at the Hamburg State Opera this fall along with Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle.

Yesterday I attended the opening concert and ceremony of the Jewish Art Days, a new festival in Budapest Hungary. I am conducting an evening of opera music with Hungarian and Italian singers at the Italian Institute at the helm of the MAV Symphony Orchestra on Tuesday (May 31). On the program: music by Offenbach, Verdi, Saint-Säens and Halévy.

I agreed to conduct the diploma concert of Bálint Kruppa. This amazingly talented young Hungarian is playing Bartók’s 2nd Violin Concerto with the Danubia Orchestra on June 7 at the Academy of Music.

Both the orchestra and Bálint will participate in the conducting masterclass organized by the Eötvös Music Foundation. The program is called Focus of Bartók, Kurtág, Lachenmann.

Grand Opera, 20th Century Classics and New Music

First performance of Verdi’s Don Carlo went well on Friday. I am ready for the second one tonight, and two more in the next two weeks (Nov 28, December 5). What a truly grand work full of unparalleled beauty and endless inventions!
In the meantime UMZE Chamber Ensemble and myself have been preparing for our Monday evening concert at the Budapest Music Center.
I programmed pieces by Hungarian composers living abroad along with 20th Century classics for ensemble.

Leos Janáček: Capriccio for piano (for left hand) and winds

The two Hamary http://www.hamary.de compositions are clear homages to Debussy and Janáček, and are full of strong, simple and original musical ideas. Ciaccona by Karosi http://www.karosi.org is a inventive take on Boulez’s Dérive 1 while his Sanguine is a fun and virtuoso ensemble piece.

Peter Kiss will be the soloist for both the Janáček Capriccio and Hamary’s ‘Hommage à Janáček’ and he will be playing the original piano prelude by Debussy as well.

Healing with Bruckner and Conversations with Beethoven

Today at the Huntsville airport a young TSA agent, seeing my big musical scores, asked me about my profession. Upon finding out I was the conductor of the Friday Beethoven-Bruckner concert he said he was really sorry for missing the concert because he was so looking forward to it. I asked him why he did not come. “Because of what happened in Paris. I didn’t want to be in a public place with lots of people around.”, he said. Luckily most of HSO’s loyal audience was there to experience Kirill Gerstein’s amazing piano playing, and the true bonding of musicians and audience with the help of Bruckner’s powerful Symphony #4. Both the Bruckner and Bach’s Sinfonia in E-minor, the encore played by Kirill were dedicated to the dead and the wounded in the Paris attacks.
This afternoon Kirill Gerstein, three principal players of the HSO and myself (with my clarinet in hand) kicked off the Causal Classics series with a show called “Beethoven Conversations”. Kirill and I had a lively conversation about musicians’ every day challenge of interpretation and authenticity. We all got to listen to two Liszt Transcendent Etudes then, after a short demo of Mozart’s Quintet for Piano and Winds we performed Beethoven’s composition of the same title. Everybody who came to Roberts Hall at University of Alabama, Huntsville had a grand time, and I had fun playing some great chamber music as well. Once a great player like Kirill Gerstein comes to town we better take advantage of it and hear him play more than just, an otherwise glorious, piano concerto.
I am on my way to Budapest, Hungary to start rehearsals for the fully staged production of Verdi’s Don Carlo and also to perform new music with Ensemble UMZE at the Budapest Music Center.
Onward to make more beautiful and exciting music.

WOW Verdi

Sure I know, Verdi was a genius. I have always known that. Everybody knows that. When you are studying one of his operas however it all just hits you again. I have not done a fully staged Verdi for years (I was fortunate to do ‘Un ballo in maschera’ at the Montreal Opera) but now it is time again. I will be conducting four performances of ‘Don Carlo’ at the Budapest Opera (Erkel Theater) at the end of November and first week of December. Amazing ideas, inventive harmonies, unparalleled characters, genius orchestration. I am having an amazing time just studying it.

Kirill, pianist extraordinaire and a good friend has agreed to open our Casual Classics series as well just two days after he plays with the orchestra. This is where I pick up my clarinet and along with principal wind players of the Huntsville Symphony will perform Beethoven’s Quintet for Piano and Winds. The first Casual Classics of the season is called “Beethoven Conversations” and will be held at Roberts Hall of University of Alabama, Huntsville. Join us Sunday at 3:30PM if you are interested in hearing Kirill and I talk about Ludwig and about other composers and classical music related, exciting stuff as well. And of course, there will be music played by Beethoven. He was a genius. But everybody knows that.

Last Friday I conducted the HSO’s first concert in the Pops Series. We presented live magic acts with live symphonic music including pieces by Liszt, Saint-Saens, Berlioz, John Williams and others. Michael Grandinetti illusionists did an amazing job with our Halloween audience and let our orchestra shine in making music as well as in doing a mind reading trick with the audience. Starting tomorrow the Armel Opera Festival presents a two hour long fun and interactive musical program including a series of “Opera Sitcom” performed by the students of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, directed by Andras Almasi Toth. I’ll be leading the audience in an interesting improvisation exercise based on a composition by Peter Eötvös called “Triangel”. Audience members will be distributed triangles of all shapes and sizes and I will play along with me, also hitting three different size triangles wherever I can. The program ends with ‘Conduct Me!’ where brave audience members can get a crash course in conducting from me and get in front of the orchestra and singers and conduct live. On the rep: Aria of The Queen of the Night, Brindisi by Verdi, Prelude and Habanera from Carmen.
I am looking forward to the challenge of engaging audiences that are not necessarily familiar with classical music and opera and make them realize how much fun it actually is to discover Mozart and even contemporary classical music for yourself. I am also happy to share the same island (on river Danube) with several thousand of music lovers and artists like Robbie Williams, the Gogol Bordello or Mariza.

Bang On A Can Verdi

I am writing this entry during a short, self-imposed break from watching the movie Men, Women & Children while flying somewhere over the Atlantic in the course of my travel- an 18 hour journey on planes and at airports in between. I am going from a program with handful of musicians and the intimacy of a 300 seat hall to a 200+ chorus with full orchestra at a 2K+ seat auditorium. This is a must see movie. I won’t spoil it for you…all I am saying now is that people are different, fascinating, boring, engaging, well rounded, screwed up in different ways, and it is all “out there” in cyber space since the invention of the internet. This movie is comforting in a way because it tells us there is nothing new under the sun as far as human behavior goes. It is very honest about how people live more and more in the virtual world of Facebook and war games and dating sites. I guess this is what I am doing with this blog no different from billions of other people (Note to self: google the number of personal blogs in the world!). Creating a virtual copy of yourself and talking to a practically unknown audience (yes, I know I should track data on how many people and from where, are actually reading this) is an intellectually exciting thing to do. Realizing how many other people are doing the same thing all around the world is humbling.

Traveling often creates time that needs to be used in ways that don’t come into play with a regular day job. Reading, watching movies, writing a blog post off line and posting it later, thinking about stuff, making plans are all part of “being on the road”.
Trying to make sense of “lost time” while getting from A to B has become a lifestyle for me. It is a necessity and as always I am trying to make the best of it.
I just remembered a quote from American composer David Lang (Note to self: nice job connecting the dots and making this post more than just babbling!) “And time eventually will pass” [check quote!] The quote is from the notes to ‘Little Eye’ a movement from the 40+ minute chamber music cycle by Lang entitled ‘Child’. ‘Child’ is a very honest, naive, simple yet labyrinth like musical piece. UMZE Ensemble just played it under my direction as the second half of a concert with flutist Claire Chase at Budapest Music Center. I think programming this minimalist piece was a pretty good idea after listening 45 minutes of complex, difficult music by composers like Jozsef Sari, Peter Eotvos, Dai Fujikura or Gregory Vajda.
Letting your thoughts wander while listening to repetitive music is a liberating and also -to me at least- somewhat disturbing experience.

By now most of you are probably thinking, “Where is he going with all this?” or “Hello, we were promised some Verdi here!” All right, since this type of stream of consciousness blogpost cannot be finished, only stopped, I am stopping it right here.
Going from David Lang to Giuseppe Verdi with thousands of miles traveled in between is my reality. Very different programs with very different bands at very different places-yet similar and connected. There is a powerful pop music quality to the Verdi Requiem. There is a lot of pop music in David Lang’s art. Simple lines, repetition, basic musical ideas painted with plain colors. Raw power.
This physical reality however feels a lot like our virtual reality: seemingly random things interconnected with the help of search engines and our personal preferences. Bringing us back to the movie Men, Women and Children ☺.

Going from Lang to Verdi is natural after all. It is real life.

Tonight is the second performance of Ferenc Erkel Istvan Kiraly (King Stephen) at the Margaret Island Open Air stage. Almost by the time we start the second half of the performance (right after the August 20 Festivities fireworks) Duna TV (Hungarian Public Media’s only satellite channel) starts the broadcast of yesterday’s performance.
