House of Music, Hungary | Magyar Zene Háza

Since my last entry a lot has happened, times were busy (as you can usually tell by the weeks that have passed without a blogpost…), and rich of experiences. I have conducted a new music studio-concert with the Hungarian Radio Symphony, including my piece, Lessons with Vivaldi. There was a concert with the Savaria Symphony in Szombathely, Hungary (pieces by Bartók and Bruckner), one new music set with the MAV Symphony Orchestra, and a presentation with UMZE Ensemble. We have performed Phlegra by Iannis Xenakis. The show was part of the Xenakis 100 day-long program of the House of Music, Hungary. I will have two more concerts with the Savaria Orchestra in June, one will include the world premiere of Fort Fanfare, a festive piece of music I wrote for the Kőszeg Castle Open Air Theater’s 40th Birthday celebration. At the end of the month the Peter Eötvös Foundation and Ensemble Ars Nova from France will present a conductor-composer master class at the Budapest Music Center. This was supposed to happen early this year, but it was postponed due to covid concerns. Our distinguished guest professor will be the world famous Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg.

Also, there will be some very exciting news to share very soon, so stay tuned!

Legutóbbi bejegyzésem óta a szokásosnál több idő telt el. Ebből is látszik, hogy nem unatkoztam… A Rádiózenekarral, majd a MÁV Zenekarral is volt egy egy kortárs zenei koncertem (előbbin elhangzott Leckék Vivaldival című darabom is), a Savaria Szimfonikusokkal pedig Bartók és Bruckner műveket dirigáltam. Az UMZE együttessel, a Phlegra című kompozíció előadásával, részt vettünk a Magyar Zene Háza (aki még nem ismeri, az kattintson a fenti linkre) Xenakis 100 programján. A Savaria Zenekarral még kétszer lépek fel júniusban, egyszer Zalaegerszegen, egyszer pedig a Kőszegi Várszínház jubileumi programsorozatán. Utóbbira rendelte a Kőszegi Várszínház Várfanfár című zenekari darabomat, amelyet kifejezetten az ottani udvar akusztikája inspirált. Június végén pótoljuk az Eötvös Péter Alapítvány és az Ars Nova együttes közös januári kurzusát, amely COVID miatt lett halasztva. Magnus Lindberg, világhírű finn zeneszerző lesz a vendégprofesszor. Ja igen, és hamarosan 2 izgalmas bejelenteni valóm is lesz, szóval „maradjon mindenki a készülékek előtt”!

Year-End and the Never-Ending Story | Év vége és a végtelen történet

Here goes the never-ending story of this pandemic.
My debut at Carnegie Hall and two other ’25th Anniversary Salute to Vienna’ concerts got postponed due to the unfolding Omicron-variant situation in the US. It would have been wonderful to finish 2021 on the stage of the Carnegie Hall for sure, but other than that I cannot really complain about my luck during this past almost two years now. I have had lots of great opportunities – some of them happened because of the pandemic situation – and even more importantly, my loved ones are safe and healthy. Talking about loved ones, 2022 will begin with a conversation concert of Mozart’s big A-major Piano Concerto. This will be the first time my son, Vince Vajda and I will be on the same stage making music together. Vince is just turning 19 this December, and has just won the Grand Prize of the Carpathian Basin Competition. I am really happy to be able to introduce his talent to our audience in Huntsville.

After the above mentioned Casual Classics concert I will return to Budapest to conduct a concert at the helm of Modern Art Orchestra. We will be presenting pieces written during the longest lockdown period of last year as part of the ‘Art of Virus’ project. Other than more exciting concerts (I have updated the dates until the end of February, look to the right!) many new compositions of mine will be premiered next year (8 pieces of a total length of about 75 minutes to be precise). I will keep you updated as always.

A pandémia végtelen történetének legújabb fejezete: a 25. évfordulós ‘Salute to Vienna’ koncertek, köztük a Carnegie Hall-ban való debütálásom átkerülnek a jövő évre. Persze szép lett volna a Carnegie Hall színpadán befejezni az évet, de az az igazság, hogy az elmúlt lassan két év alapvetően szerencsésen alakult a számomra. Folyamatos munkám, és több fantasztikus lehetőségem volt – köztük olyanok is, amelyek a pandémia helyzet nélkül nem jöhettek volna létre -, szóval tényleg nincs panaszra okom. Ráadásul szeretteim mind jól vannak és egészségesek. Ha már a szeretteimről van szó, a 2022-es év első koncertjét Vince fiam zongoraszólójával dirigálhatom. Vince most lesz 19 éves, és idén nyerte meg a Kárpát-medencei Zenei Verseny nagydíját. Január 9-én a Huntsville Symphony Casual Classics sorozatában Mozart nagy A-dúr zongoraversenyét adjuk majd elő. January 16-án azután a BMC-ben, a Modern Art Orchestra élén vezényelem majd a tavalyi év egyik legizgalmasabb kezdeményezésének, az ‘Art of Virus’ projektnek koncertszerű válogatását. Erről a projektről részletesen itt lehet olvasni,

A sok izgalmas koncerten kívül (jobbra nézve olvasható a beosztásom február végéig) a 21-22-es szezon második felében új kompozícióim (pontosan 8 darab, kb. 75 perc totál időtartamban) ősbemutatóira kerül majd sor, melyeknek egy részét persze magam vezényelem majd. Finale of Live Streams and a Concert-Film | Live stream és koncertfilm finálé

The Year of COVID-19 has granted me a fantastic season finale.
I have arrived to Berlin, Germany, a city of many faces and with culture everywhere. I am enjoying the hospitality of Collegium Hungaricum where I have a view of the TV tower and the Pergamon Museum from the window of my apartment. I am composing, walking the city and attending the rehearsals of Georgia Bottoms, Comic Opera of the Modern South at the Universität der Künste Berlin. Along with Máté Bella’s Spring Awakening (a chamber opera I have conducted myself a few years back) the Art University of Berlin is doing its Masters Degree final exams for its singers with these two works. Ensemble United Berlin is playing under the baton of Errico Fresis.
In the meantime in Budapest, Hungary at the wonderful space of the FUGA Center the collective centriFUGA is doing its season finale concert. The program includes a percussion duo of mine, with the title: Drop Shadow. I have composed this piece at the request of centriFUGA.
The concert film of ‘The Analphabet’ project, recorded exactly a month ago in Poitiers, France, with world class vocal soloists and Ensemble Ars Nova will be available for viewing. The program is about the hardship of communication, about mother tongue and foreign languages, and about the inability to speak (at all or with one-another). A COVID-19 szezon meglepő évad fináléval ajándékozott meg. Két héten belül három online esemény is lesz – és reméljük, ezek az utolsó korlátozott nézőszámmal megtartott előadások, – amely részben vagy egészében mutatja be egy darabomat, illetve amit én is vezényelek.
Ma (szombat) 20:30-tól vasárnap éjfélig lesz elérhető az egy hónapja forgatott “Az analfabéta” koncertfilm, amely rezidens művészként az első nagy projektem a francia Ars Nova együttessel. A programban: Claude Vivier: Bouchara, Ligeti György: Aventures, Georges Aperghis: Corps á corps, Vajda Gergely: Az analfabéta (Agota Kristof szövegére) – ősbemutató, Kurtág: What is the Word? A program a nyelv és zene témakörében mozog, és az anyanyelv-idegen nyelv kapcsolatát, a beszédre való képtelenséget, a kommunikáció nehézségeit, illetve a zenét mint nyelvhelyettesítő eszközt vizsgálja.
Vasárnap 18h-tól élőben a FUGÁ-ból a centriFUGA szezonzárója, amely az én új, erre az alkalomra komponált ütős-duómmal, a Drop Shadow-val indul.
Július 1-én és 2-án a berlini Universität der Künste évadzáró pordikciójaként, Bella Máté: A tavasz ébredése c. komaoperája mellett (amely július 3-án és 4-én látható majd) látható és hallható lesz Georgia Bottoms c. operám. Az Ensemble United Berlin-t Errico Fresis vezényli.
Ahogy itt ülök a berlini Collegium Hungaricum apartmanjában, kilátással a Pergamon Múzeumra és a TV toronyra (köszönet a vendéglátásért!), és élvezem a város kulturális pezsgését – múzeumok, séták, vacsorák, opera próbák – arra is gondolok, hogy hátha ez valóban már az utolsó alkalom, hogy csökkentett nézőszám előtt, online kell előadásokat tartani.

Long January I Hosszú január

“January has been a long year, but I have survived”. I’ve run into this meme online a couple of times in the past week. Indeed, a lot has happened in politics and international affairs since we have entered the Twenties of the century. It feels like my own affairs, too are getting up to speed with the news cycle. Confession: I like the speed and the buzz. 🙂
I am alternating between composing (working on ‘The Music Gene’ piece now for April), studying for upcoming concerts (Ravel and Trombones is coming up) and brushing up on my German (it is rusty to say the least).

“Január hosszú év volt, de túléltük.” Egy hete sokadszorra futok bele az interneten ebbe a mémbe, és valóban a hírciklus még a szokásosnál is jobban felgyorsulni látszik. Nem panaszkodhatom, mert az én dolgaim is sűrűn követik egymást, és nem mondhatom, hogy ez ne lenne kedvemre való. Most éppen ‘A zenegén’ című szopránra, narrátorra és hangszeres együttesre írandó kompozíciómon dolgozom, melynek bemutatója áprilisban lesz Huntsville-ban, miközben folyamatosan darabokat tanulok a koncertjeimre, és berozsdásodott német tudásomat is próbálom felfrissíteni.
