Just like in the title, the very interesting instrument called TAROGATO is somewhere in between the Saxophone and the Clarinet. I like to say, it is a wooden saxophone.

On November 22 at the Budapest Music Center the UMZE Ensemble will team up with the best Hungarian jazz and etno-jazz players/composers to present the Crossover Concerto Project. Saxophones, the Clarinet and also the Tárogató will be featured as solo instruments. Check out the details here!

After a succesful and very well received classical concert in Huntsville I am back in Budapest to conduct two contemporary music programs. After Monday’s concert we will start the rehearsals for a special program at the Palace of the Arts. Many pieces by German-Hungarian organ player-composer Zsigmond Szathmáry will be performed among them a Requiem in the memory of Fukushima. I will be conducting the New Liszt Chamber Choir and the UMZE Ensemble. Check out the November 30 concert program below.

Egy sikeres és a közönség által igen nagy lelkesedéssel fogadott Huntsville-i klasszikus koncert után ismét Budapesten vagyok, ahol az elkövetkező 12 napban két hangversenyt is dirigálok. Az UMZE nemcsak jövő hétfőn lép fel a BMC-ben, de 30-án a MÜPÁban is. A második koncert fókuszában a Németországban élő kiváló magyar orgonista-zeneszerző Szathmáry Zsigmond művei lesznek majd. Az UMZE muzsikusai mellett az Új Liszt Ferenc Kamarakórus énekművészeit is dirigálhatom Szathmáry Requiem Fukushima emlékére című művében. A programról részletesen az alábbi linken lehet olvasni.

Big Band Theory/ A Nagy Banda

I have a theory. Big Band concerts expand along with the Universe towards the end of the calendar year. This is for sure the case with me in 2019. Tonight at Pécs, Hungary I will be conducting the first concert of the so called “Classical Chill Out” series with the Pannon Philharmonic. This time the second half of the concert will be played by the Pannon Big Band (with many members of the symphony orchestra playing and also singing!). This series is geared towards foreigners living in this beautiful South-Hungarian city. There are tables, snacks and alcoholic drinks served alongside with a casual concert without intermission. Tonight I will be conducting two Jazz Suites by Shostakovich and Gershwin’s An American in Paris. I will also serve as the host for the evening, including the Big Band portion of it.

On December 14 the Modern Art Orchestra is putting on a kind of Family Christmas Show at the Budapest Music Center. Bandleader and flugelhorn player-composer-extraordinaire, Kornél Fekete-Kovács asked me to join the band as a conductor and also as a clarinet soloist. In the latter function I’ll be performing the slow movement of a piece composed by Kornél himself, entitled Elements.
By reading the program linked below it only takes a second to discover that there is more than one Vajda on the program. My son, Vince Vajda will be also playing at this concert, hence the title “Music With Fathers and Sons”. He’ll be performing with his clarinetist friend, Olivér Kusztós.

As for the “hidden big news” section of this post: I am happy and honored to be nominated (in October) and elected (last week) as a new member of the Széchenyi Academy of Letters and Arts.

Nagyon úgy tűnik, hogy a Big Band koncertek szaporodnak az év vége felé. Ma este a Pannon Filharmonikusokat vezénylem a “Classical Chill Out” sorozat első hangversenyén, melynek második felében a Pannon Big Band muzsikál majd. A sorozat a Pécsett élő külföldiek irányába próbál nyitni, és számukra biztosítani kötetlen lehetőséget arra, hogy a klasszikus zenét egy pohár pezsgővel a kézben élvezhessék, avagy ismerhessék meg, ha még nem volt benne részük. A szimfonikus zenekar Sosztakovics két Jazz Szvitjét és Gershwin Egy amerikai Párizsban című művét adja elő, míg a Big Band, -ennek a résznek is én leszek a házigazdája- Sinatra és Michael Bublé dalaiból válogat.

December 14-én a Budapest Music Centerben a Modern Art Orchestra karácsonyi koncertjén életemben először lépek ugyanarra a színpadra Vince fiammal, aki zongorázni fog. Kusztós Olivérrel adják elő azt az, egyelőre meglepetés, kamarazenei művet, amellyel nemrég díjat is nyertek. Fekete Kovács Kornél és jómagam felváltva fújunk (Kornél a szárnykürtöt, én a klarinétot) és vezényelünk. Az ‘Alma meg a fája’ programról az alábbi linken lehet bővebben olvasni.

Ami a mai “poszt végére rejtett nagy hírt” illeti, örömmel írhatom most már hivatalosan is, hogy jelöltek (októberben) és megválasztottak (a múlt héten) a Széchenyi Irodalmi és Művészeti Akadémia rendes tagjának. Egy barátom szerint most akkor már valóban “rendes tag” vagyok. A tréfát félre téve, nagy megtiszteltetés, hogy irodalmi és művészeti példaképeimnek, sok általam tisztelt és szeretett nagy kedvencemnek lehetek a tagtársa ezen a nagy múltú akadémián.

Clarinet Symphony NEW ALBUM / Klarinét Szimfónia ÚJ ALBUM

“Vajda’s Clarinet Symphony for two clarinets (performed by Gábor Varga and János Szepesi) and orchestra was less folk-flavored and more focused on a fascinating orchestrational features that, in many cases, overshadowed the soloists’ content. It was structured in seven short movements that employed the “variations” idea via a suite that harkened back to the Baroque model. Vajda’s language was a unique modern tongue, not triadic or modal, but definitely his own, and characterised by skillful use of winds and percussion to cook up little sonic worlds that burbled and bubbled like extraterrestrial bodies.”

The quote above is taken from a review of the World Premiere performance of Clarinet Symphony (with the Hungarian Radio Symphony), a piece that is now, along with Alice Études (for clarinet and string quartet) and Persistent Dreams (for solo clarinet) available on CD and for online download as well. A fenti angol nyelvű kritika részlet a BachTrack-ről való, amely a Klarinétszimfónia ősbemutatója (Rádiózenekar, MÜPA) után jelent meg. A BMC sorozatban immár második szerzői lemezem ez, amelyről így írtam a kísérőfüzetben:

Van abban valami természetes, amikor a komponista maga játssza a műveit. Happy Wednesday / Vidám szerda

I had a great time in Portland, OR with Three Leg Torso and the Portland Festival Symphony playing at beautiful city parks for big crowds in the first two weeks of August. After returning to Hungary I’ve had some time off at the famous Lake Balaton. Of course, I used the time to do some composing and arranging. I am working on my new orchestral piece for the Hungarian Radio symphony for March 2019 called Gloomy Sunday Variations, and on arrangements of Debussy’s Faun and Ravel’s Pavane for flute, clarinet, harp and string quartet. I am looking forward to starting the 18-19 season in Huntsville in about three weeks, and in Hungary with the Radio Symphony at the end of September. I will keep you posted, thanks for reading!

Hiába még nyár, de már szezonkezdés érzésem van az e heti koncertemmel kapcsolatban. Az Európai Klarinétfesztivál (program a fenti linken) gála koncertje ma este egyben a debütálásom is a Győri Filharmonikusok élén.
Augusztus első két hetében remek hangulatú koncertjeim voltak a Portland Festival Symphony élén a Three Leg Torso nevű world music csapat közreműködésével a város parkjaiban, szép számú közönség előtt. Ezután nyaraltam a Balatonnál egy kicsit. A fürdés és a Vajda család szokásos éves összejövetele mellé persze befért némi komponálás és hangszerelés is. A Rádiózenekar jövő évi koncertjére írom a Szomorú Vasárnap Variációkat, illetve a Ravel Pavane és a Debussy Faun kamarazenei átiratait is készítem. Kb. 3 hét múlva kezdem a 18-19-es szezont Huntsville-ben, majd a Rádiózenekarral itthon szeptember végén. Többet hamarosan itt! Kellemes nyár végét mindenkinek!
